Italian Barbecue Sub Sandwiches
Vegetarian Italian Grain Meat Sausage by Field Roast teamed with Guy Fieri Bourbon Brown Sugar barbecue sauce with excellent results! Served on a toasted sub roll with yellow mustard, ripe tomatoes and Follow Your Heart Vegan Bleu Cheese Salad Dressing.
This is a ‘how to get your husband out of bed on the Fourth of July after he worked all night’ sandwich!
Makes 5-6 small subs
2 T. extra virgin olive oil for frying
12.95 oz. pkg. Field Roast Vegetarian Italian Sausage (thawed) – remove casings with scissors, then cut each sausage on the diagonal into 1/2 inch rounds
1/2 c. Guy Fieri Bourbon Brown Sugar – sweet & sticky – barbecue sauce
fresh squeeze of 1/2 lemon or more to taste
steak & sausage sub rolls, lightly toasted or lightly broiled on the insides
prepared yellow mustard
thinly sliced ripe tomatoes
Follow Your Heart Vegan Blue Cheese Salad Dressing
In large skillet, over medium heat, melt olive oil. Place sliced sausage evenly in the pan trying not to overlap.
Cook on one side till lightly browned – a couple of minutes – then flip each piece over. Cook again till lightly browned.
Add barbecue sauce and fresh lemon squeeze. Stir to make the sauce smooth and coat all the sausage, then cook about 4 minutes, stirring as needed. Remove from heat.
Prepare sub rolls. Squirt mustard on one half. Top mustard with tomato slices. Drizzle vegan bleu cheese dressing over the tomatoes.
Top second half of sub roll with the barbecued sausage slices. Close, cut and eat.
Notes: This was my fourth Of July sandwich. Simple to make, delicious to eat. No need for a grill when you can enjoy the same taste on food without all that mess.
Don’t cook this vegetarian sausage too long. It dries out quickly.
