Velvet Ice Cream, an Ohio-based company, has issued a voluntary recall on its entire portfolio of products. A routine check-up found the presence of Listeria bacteria in some of Velvet Ice Cream’s packages and the recall was issued out of an abundance of caution.
The recall includes the company’s ice cream and sherbet products that were distributed to several states. Retailers in Indiana, Kentucky, Ohio, and West Virginia should be aware that they may have Velvet Ice Cream products in stock at their stores.
No illnesses linked to this particular recall have been reported, but the fear is that, if ingested, individuals may be infected by the Listeria bacteria. Young children, elderly people, pregnant people, and those with otherwise weakened immune systems are most at risk of adverse effects due to Listeria. Healthy individuals typically only suffer short-term symptoms like fever, headache, nausea, abdominal pain, and diarrhea.
Recalled products were packaged in various sizes and containers and were sold after March 24, 2021 in stores. A thorough list of product descriptions and codes can be found on the FDA’s website. Some of the flavors include Neapolitan, Chocolate Fudge, Cookies ‘n Cream, Blueberry Cheesecake, and Cookie Dough.
If you have any of the products in your possession you should dispose of it immediately and not consume them. Velvet Ice Cream CEO Luconda Dage said the extensive recall was done with customers in mind.
“We’re conducting this voluntary recall in cooperation with the FDA out of consideration for the wellbeing and safety of our customers and consumers,” she said in the FDA release. “We continue to be committed to serving consumers with high-quality ice cream and sherbet products”.
No illnesses have been reported.
